Recall Category: Power Train – Constant-Velocity Joint May Become Damaged

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V185000 reports the constant-velocity joint which transfers power between the transfer case and the rear drive shaft, may become damaged, possibly resulting in loss of power to the rear wheels.

According to the NHTSA, a loss of power to the rear wheels can affect vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the vehicle is parked after a loss of power to the rear wheels and the parking brake is not engaged, unintended rollaway can occur, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

BMW will notify registered owners, and dealers will replace the constant-velocity joint and inspect the transfer case, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 18, 2020. Owners may contact BMW Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-525-7417 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”).

You may also contact the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline toll-free at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) during normal business hours, Eastern Standard Time, or visit https://www.safercar.gov/.
