US FlagUS/Washington: Belle Chemical, a Billings, Montana establishment, recalls an estimated 103,000 packages of Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide from the American marketplace due to suspected failure meet child-resistant packaging regulations and violation of FHSA labeling requirements with consequential risk of chemical burns, ingestion, poisoning and GI tract laceration damage, all serious safety hazards.

Additional information:
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) reports this recall involves certain Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide products that are sold in three sizes: four (4)-ounce, eight (8)-ounce and one (1)-pound packages, as follows:

  • The products are labeled as being used for soaps, cleaners, water treatment, food preparation, pH buffer and metal dissolution. The Potassium Hydroxide products and the 4-ounce and 8-ounce sodium hydroxide products are sold in black resealable bags; the 1-pound Sodium Hydroxide product is sold in a white resealable bag. The Sodium Hydroxide product is stated as being food grade.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CPSC, the recalled Chemical products contain Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide, two substances that must be stored in child resistant packaging as required by the US Poison Prevention Packaging Act (“PPPA”).

The packaging of the products is not child resistant, posing a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes. In addition, the label on the product violates the US Federal Hazardous Substance Act (“FHSA”) by omitting the word “poison” for poisonous chemicals and the mandatory hazard statement on the front on the packaging.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide Chemicals, please do not use them. Instead, kindly store the recalled products in a safe location out of reach of children and contact Belle Chemical for free replacement child-resistant packaging and revised label to affix to the product.

Disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect the drinking water supply and the ecosystem. Please contact your local municipal hazardous authority in the Blue Pages of your telephone directory for details.
