US NHTSA Recalls: BMW Motorcycles

Among the fifty nine (59) recalls the NHTSA announced this March comes news of the following:

Logo - BMW of North America, LLCBMW of North America, LLC (“BMW”), a Greer, South Carolina establishment and a subsidiary of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG of Munich, Germany, has recalled an estimated 4,026 model year 2020 F900R, F900XR, S1000RR, F750GS, F850GS, F850GS Adventure, R1250GS, R1250GS Adventure, R1250RS, R1250R, RnineT, RnineT Pure and RnineT Scrambler and 2019-2020 S1000R Motorcycles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

Recall Category: Exterior Lighting

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V146000 reports the brake light in the recalled Motorcycles may flash instead of remain steady during emergency braking. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”.

According to the NHTSA, flashing brake lights can cause confusion to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of a crash.

BMW will notify registered owners, and dealers will reprogram the emergency stop signal function, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 4, 2020. Owners may contact BMW Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-525-7417 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, Eastern Standard Time (“EST”). No manufacturer’s designation was listed for this recall at press time.
