Among the forty eight (48) recalls the NHTSA announced this month comes news of the following:

Logo - Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (“MMNA”), a Cypress, California establishment and a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation of Minato, Tokyo and part of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, has recalled an estimated 20,000 model year 1998-2000 Montero vehicles marketed, sold and delivered in the United States.

NHTSA Safety Notification 20V035000 reports that these vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver Air Bag Inflators (“NADI”) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (“PSAN”) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.

According to the NHTSA, an underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall is expected to begin March 22, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA Customer Service toll-free at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA’s designation for this recall is SR-20-001.
