US/Silver Spring:
Mill Stream Corp., doing business as Sullivan Harbor Farm, a Hancock, Maine establishment, recalls ten (10) batch/lots of Cold Smoked Salmon Fish products due to suspected risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination and consequential risk of Gram-positive bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.
Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Smoked Salmon Fish products are subject to this recall:
- Sullivan Harbor Farm Cold Smoked Salmon, consisting of whole salmon side, sold in two (2) pound, one (1) pound, eight (8) ounce and four (4) ounce packages with the following batch/lot numbers 7049, 7050, 7051, 7052, 7054, 7056, 7058, 7060, 7062 or 7066.
Please consult the photograph above for details of the food’s packaging, design and retail presentation.
==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.
According to the FDA, the recall was initiated because the product’s water phase salt (“WPS”) tested below 3.5%. This was discovered upon re-review of laboratory certificates, which were found to have incorrectly reported WPS levels. Labeling instructions state to keep refrigerated at or below 38 degrees F and that the product may be frozen.
Because the WPS is under 3.5% the product must remain frozen until ready to consume. Product stored in the refrigerator after thawing has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. You should neither serve nor consume the recalled Fish identified above.
The recalled Smoked Salmon Fish products were sold and distributed in ME, MA, VT, RI, NY, CT, PA, NJ, OH, UT, IA, TN, MN, CO, FL, AZ,WI, WA, GA, IL, VA, MI and TX. The Fish products sold were through retail, wholesale and online orders.
The affected Fish Salmon product was sold frozen by Mill Stream Corp, but may have been thawed by retailers before sale. Customers who purchased the product frozen should keep it frozen until you’re ready to use it and thaw under refrigeration immediately before use. If you have refrigerated product subject to the recall, please dispose of it immediately even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
==> For information about Botulism, please consult the “Illnesses” tab on this site, located at the top of this page.
==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.
If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Cold Smoked Salmon Fish products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Salmon Fish to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
==> If you have a medical emergency, please contact 9-1-1, your closest hospital or emergency center equipped to properly treat bacteria poisoning such as Botulism.
