US FlagUS/Washington: Carrier Corporation, a Palm Beach Gardens, Florida establishment recalls an estimated total 5,800 (5,350 in the US and 450 in Canada) of Carrier and Bryant branded Heat Pumps due to possible fan failure and consequential risk of fire, burns and property damage, all serious health and safety hazards.

Additional information:
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) reports this recall involves certain Carrier and Bryant branded 1.5-ton Multi-Zone, 4-ton Multi-Zone and 4-ton Single-Zone Ductless Outdoor Heat Pump units.

The recalled Heat Pump units are used for cooling and heating homes and light commercial facilities. The model number and product number can be found on the nameplate/rating plate on the side of the units. The recalled models and product numbers are as follows:

  • Carrier branded 1.5-ton Multi-Zone Heat Pump sold with a model number of 38MGQC18—3 and a product number of 38MGQC18—301–
  • Carrier branded 4-ton Multi-Zone Heat Pump sold with a model number of 38MGQF48—3 and a product number of 38MGQF48—301–
  • Carrier branded 4-ton Single-Zone Heat Pump sold with a model number of 38MBQB48—3 and a product number of 38MBQB48–301–
  • Bryant branded 1.5-ton Multi-Zone Heat Pump sold with a model number of 538TEQ018RCMA and a product number of 538TEQ018RCMAAAA
  • Bryant branded 4-ton Multi-Zone Heat Pump sold with a model number of 538TEQ048RFMA and a product number of 538TEQ048RFMAAAA
  • Bryant branded 4-ton Single-Zone Heat Pump sold with a model number of 538REQ048RBMA and a product number of 538REQ048RBMAAAA

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the CPSC, the fan motor on the Heat Pumps can fail, causing the units to overheat, posing a fire hazard. Carrier has received six (6) reports of the recalled Heat Pumps catching fire (one occurred in the United States and five in Canada). No injuries have been reported.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Heat Pumps, please do not use them. Instead, immediately contact your installing servicer, dealer or contractor to arrange for a free repair. While awaiting repair, you should monitor affected units while they are being operated and keep foliage and other flammable items at least 24 inches away from the recalled units.
