US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Pet Supplies Plus, a Livonia, Michigan establishment, recalls certain batch/lots of Pig Ear Treats due to suspected risk of Salmonella contamination and consequential risk of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Pig Ear Treats are subject to this recall:

  • Bulk Pig Ears

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the FDA, the Bulk Pig Ears were distributed to Pet Supplies Plus stores in AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI and WV. The Bulk Pig Ears were stocked in open bins. Prepackaged branded Pig Ears are not included in this voluntary recall.

To date, 45 individuals in 13 states have been diagnosed with Salmonella related illness. None of these cases, however, are confirmed to be a result of purchasing the recalled Pig Ear Treats from Pet Supplies Plus. Testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development revealed that aging bulk Pig Ear products in one of the company’s stores tested positive for Salmonella. Consequently, you should neither serve nor consume the recalled Pet Treats identified above.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm pet food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Pig Ear Treats, please do not feed them to your pet(s). Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. Wash down all prep surfaces, serving implements and serving bowls with a bleach/water mixture; rinse well with lots of hot soapy water.
