CDC Mexican Raw Oyster Warning [US]


US FlagUS/Atlanta: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC") LogoThe US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”), an Atlanta, Georgia based health promotion and disease prevention authority, issues an investigation notice and warning concerning an outbreak that has sickened at least 16 people from five (5) US states with suspected Campylobacter, Norovirus and Shigella, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli non-O157 and Vibrio.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) reports this outbreak has caused at least 16 people to become seriously sickened.

Additional information is as follows:

  • CDC and public health and regulatory officials in several states are investigating a multi-state outbreak of gastrointestinal illnesses linked to Raw Oysters harvested from Estero El Cardon, an estuary in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
  • On May 6, 2019, one US distributor of Raw Oysters harvested from Estero El Cardon issued a voluntary recall. The following day, on May 7, 2019, Estero El Cardon was closed to further Oyster harvesting pending investigation.
  • Sixteen (16) people from Alaska, California, Illinois, New Hampshire and Nevada are known to have been sickened. At least two (2) of the people were known to have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
  • The CDC reports these illnesses started on or about December 16, 2018 and have continued up to and including April 4, 2019.
  • People were infected with one or more of the following pathogens: Campylobacter, Norovirus and Shigella, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli non-O157 and Vibrio.
  • The CDC notes people may be more likely to develop a more serious illness if you have certain medical conditions, such as liver disease or weakened immune systems.
  • This investigation is ongoing and the CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
