Caito Watermelon, Honeydew & Cantaloupe Recall [US]


US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Logo - Caito FoodsCaito Foods, LLC, an Indianapolis, Indiana establishment, recalls dozens of Fresh Cut Watermelon, Fresh Cut Honeydew Melon, Fresh Cut Cantaloupe and Fresh Cut Mixed Fruit Salads containing one of these Melons, produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis and sold under the Amazon/Whole Foods, Caito Foods Distribution, Gordon Food Service, Kroger SpartanNash Distribution, Target, Trader Joes and Walmart brands or through these stores due to suspected Salmonella Carrau contamination and consequential risk of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Watermelon, Honeydew, Cantaloupe and Fruit Salad products are subject to this recall:

  • The complete listings, covering 112 different Fresh Cut Fruit products, with batch/lot numbers, best-before dates, package sizes and UPC designation can be found here: https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm635948.htm
  • The recall Fruit products were sold at the following retailers:
    • Amazon/Whole Foods under the Whole Foods Market Label
    • Kroger under the Renaissance Food Group label
    • Kroger under Boar’s Head Private Label
    • Target under the Garden Highway Label
    • Trader Joe’s under the Trader Joe’s label
    • Walmart under a Freshness Guaranteed label
  • Retailers and restaurants should also not serve the recalled pre-cut melon products and should throw the product out. The recalled products were distributed by:
    • Caito Foods Distribution with the label “Distributed by Caito Foods”
    • Gordon Food Service with the label “Distributed by Caito Foods”
    • SpartanNash Distribution with the label “Open Acres”

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the FDA, you should neither serve or consume recalled pre-cut Melon products due to suspected Salmonella Carrau contamination. The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and known to have been distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Consumers in these states who have purchased pre-cut melon products and cannot determine whether they were produced by Caito Foods, LLC should throw those products out or return them to their retailer for a refund.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Melon products or Fresh Cut Fruit products containing these Melon products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Fruit products to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
