US FlagUS/Washington: North Country Smokehouse, a Claremont, New Hampshire establishment, recalls an estimated 2,686 pounds of ready-to-eat Sausage products due to suspected metal fragment contamination and consequential risk of choking, oral injury, internal ingestion and GI tract laceration damage, all serious health and safety hazards.

Additional information:
The United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) reports the following Sausage products were produced February 7, 2019 and February 8, 2019 and are subject to this recall:

  • North Country Smokehouse Original Old Fashioned Polish Style Kielbasa, sold in 1-pound vacuum-packed packages with a use-by date of 05/09/19
  • North Country Smokehouse Natural Old Fashioned Polish Style Kielbasa, sold in 12-ounce vacuum-packed packages with a use-by 04/23/19
  • Kilchurn Estate Smoked Kielbasa, sold in one (1) pound vacuum-packed packages with a use-by date of 05/09/19

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the USDA, the Sausage products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 5390A” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The problem was discovered on March 18, 2019 by US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (“FSIS”) inspection program personnel during a routine review of establishment consumer complaint records.

In general, if metal or plastic fragments are ingested, they could cut the mouth, stomach or other parts of the GI tract, cause intestinal perforation or serious infection and possibly require surgical intervention for their safe removal.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure small children and pets can’t access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession the recalled Sausage products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
