US Government Health & Safety Agency Shutdown

US FlagUS/Washington: White HouseDue to the decision of the Trump Administration to shut down several key health and safety regulatory authorities within the US Federal government, we are unable to supply certain US-based recall notifications and product warnings as usual.

We believe the Administration’s capricious actions unnecessarily endanger the health and safety of hundreds of millions of Americans and will continue to do so for the duration of the Trump shutdown. Currently, the following agencies are affected by the situation:

Logo - US Department of Agriculture ("USDA")The US Department of Agriculture (“USDA”), responsible for recall notifications and product warnings on meat, fish, poultry and eggs goods produced or sold within the United States as well as some foods that may not be destined to reach the consumer market such as those for institutional, school or prison use. Consequently, we are currently unable to supply information on a wide variety of raw or pre-processed foods within the United States.

Logo - US Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC")The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”), responsible for recall notifications and product warnings on non-food goods sold within the United States. Consequently, we are currently unable to supply safety information on a wide variety of household, commercial and industrial products that may be unsafe or dangerous to use. These products range from dangerous lamps and bookcases to unsafe baby cribs and kitchen appliances.

Logo - US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration ("NHTSA")The US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (“NHTSA”), responsible for recall notifications and product warnings for cars, SUVs, trucks and their accessories including tires, brakes and airbags. Due to this shutdown, we are currently unable to supply information on a wide variety of unsafe cars or trucks sold within the United States.

Logo - US Food and Drug AdministrationThe US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), responsible for recall notifications and product warnings for consumer food products, medical supplies and drug products within the United States. The FDA appears to be on severely reduced staff during the Shutdown and has limited focus on recalls. Consequently, we are able to report some food recalls and warnings but cannot warrant all recall information will be communicated to the public in a timely manner.

Logo - US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC")The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”), responsible for the investigation, communication and tracebacks of bacterial and viral outbreaks linked to foods, medical supplies and drug products within the United States. Like the FDA, the CDC seems to be on severely reduced staff during the Shutdown and has cery limited focus on recalls and warnings. Consequently, we are likely unable to provide information on widespread outbreaks such as Escherichia coli (“E. coli”), Helicobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, Norovirus, Salmonella, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and other hazards in a timely manner.

During this time we will continue to report on health and safety recalls and warnings from other regulatory agencies based in other countries/jurisdictions such Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Australia, as they are unaffected by the Trump Administration Shutdown. We look forward to serving you with US-based recalls on a regular basis as soon as possible.

Update: As of Thursday, February 7, 2019, with much of the US government back to work after the longest shutdown in American history, the various regulatory agencies that provide recall information seem to be back to normal; yet another shutdown may be looming.

We strive to continue to provide timely and accurate information concerning US-based food, product, vehicle and drug recalls at all times and will update you as the situation evolves. We thank you for your patience during these difficult times.
