Vermont Packinghouse Beef Recall [US]


US FlagUS/Washington: Logo - United States Department of Agriculture ("USDA") Vermont Packinghouse, LLC, a North Springfield, Vermont establishment, recalls an estimated 10,828 pounds of Raw Intact Bone-In Beef Quarters from cattle identified as being over 30 months of age because these food products may contain Specified Risk Materials (“SRM”), specifically vertebral column (i.e., spine) of the animals with consequential risk of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (“BSE”), commonly known as Mad Cow Disease, a neurodegenerative disease of cattle. Spread to humans BSE is believed to result in variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (“vCJD”), a severe illness with life-changing complications including death, all serious health hazards.

Additional information:
The United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) reports the recalled Beef carcasses were slaughtered from February 8, 2018 to June 8, 2018 and were sold as follows:

  • White butcher-paper wrapped packages of fresh T-bone and Porterhouse Steaks from Walden Local Butcher Shop in Boston, Massachusetts.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the USDA, the quartered Beef carcasses were shipped from Vermont Packinghouse, LLC to the one (1) known retail location for further processing and were wrapped in butcher paper for consumers. The products were not known to have been shipped to customers who have memberships with the retailer.

The problem was discovered when the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (“FSIS”) was notified by the state of Vermont of a complaint received by the state.

If you are concerned about a vCJD infection or illness, please contact your healthcare provider.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure small children and pets can’t access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession the recalled Beef, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

Despite the long delay in notifying consumers of the danger of this potentially contaminated Beef, the concern at this stage is to prevent further consumption. Consequently, people should check their home freezers for the subject Beef if there is a possibility for stockpiling. You should not consume the recalled Beef. Rather, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for refund.
