US FlagUS/Silver Spring: Wegmans Cauliflower-based Meal Recall [US]Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., a Rochester, New York establishment, recalls certain Cauliflower Rice, Veggie Cauliflower Rice Blend and Stir-Fry Mix with Cauliflower products, sold in its in-store produce departments between December 7, 2018 and December 18, 2018, due to suspected risk of Escherichia coli (“E.coli”) O157:H7 contamination and consequential risk of Gram-negative bacterial infection, severe illness and/or possible life-changing complications, all serious health hazards.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Lettuce and Cauliflower products are subject to this recall:

The following recalled Cauliflower-based meals were sold with use-by dates of ranging from December 11, 2018 and December 22, 2018 and distributed to 98 Wegmans stores in Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, as follows:

  • Wegmans Cauliflower Rice, sold in one (1) pound packages with a UPC of 25313500000
  • Wegmans Cauliflower Rice, sold in eight (8) ounce packages with a UPC 25307200000
  • Wegmans Stir Fry Blend (with Cauliflower), sold in one (1) pound packages with a UPC of 25335800000
  • Wegmans Veggie (Cauliflower) Rice Blend, sold by the pound with a UPC of 253162000000

According to the FDA, this recall was initiated by Produce Packaging, Inc. based in Cleveland, Ohio, an establishment that supplies these  Cauliflower-containing food products to Wegmans and notified Wegmans that the product may have been contaminated.

Wegmans has placed automated phone calls to registered customers who purchased the product using their Shoppers Club card.

This bacteria may cause a diarrheal illness from which most healthy adults can recover completely within a week. Some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (“HUS”). According to the US Food and Drug Administration, HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure neither small children nor household pets can access the suspect food.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Cauliflower-based food products, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the meals to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
