US FlagUS/Washington: Zweigle’s branded Olive Loaf Pork Recall [US]Zweigle’s Inc., a Rochester, New York establishment, recalls an estimated 6,082 pounds of Zweigle’s branded ready-to-eat Olive Loaf Pork products due to suspected risk of Sodium Nitrite levels in excess of the US regulatory limit, a known allergen, source of dietary intolerance and possible trigger of Anaphylaxis, a serious and potential fatal situation, requiring immediate medical intervention. In addition, Sodium Nitrite is a suspected risk factor for the formation of Carcinogenic Nitrosamines, Cancer-producing compounds.

The United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) reports the following Olive Loaf Pork products produced from June 29, 2018 through August 27, 2018 are subject to this recall:

  • Zweigle’s branded ready-to-eat Olive Loaf Pork products, sold in approximate nine (9)-pound boxes containing two-half loaves with use-by dates of 8/22/18, 9/12/18, 9/19/18, 10/4/18 or 10/17/18 and a case code of 070534075225.

==> No barcodes, UPCs, item numbers or other identification numbers were listed with this recall notification.

According to the USDA, the products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 5333” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations in western New York as intact loaves for slicing.

The problem was discovered on September 20, 2018 by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (“FSIS”) inspectors while performing routine label verification activities. FSIS discovered that the establishment’s formulation for the use of Sodium Nitrite, a restricted ingredient, exceeded the regulatory limit.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of these recalled Olive Loaf Pork products, please do not serve nor consume the products identified above. Instead, return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning, adulteration or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure small children and pets can’t access the suspect food.
