Health Canada/Santé Canada (“HCSC”) reports the following Skin Creams and Lotions are subject to this recall (in alphabetical order):

  • Betasol Cream, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%
  • Betasol Lotion, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%
  • Diproson Cream, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Betamethasone Dipropionate
  • Haloderm, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%
  • L’abdijanaise Cream, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%
  • Lemonvate Cream, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%
  • Natural Papaya Cream, possibly sold with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%
  • Nature Secrète Cream, spossibly old with a prescription-only labeled ingredient of Clobetasol Propionate at 0.05%

According to Health Canada, it has seized seized eight (8) varieties of unauthorized Skin Creams and Lotions from Ayotai Canada because these products are labelled to contain prescription drug ingredients, specifically either Clobetasol Propionate or Betamethasone Dipropionate, without proper authorization or approval. These unauthorized Skin Creams and Lotions were distributed by Ayotai and sold by various retailers in Quebec.

Prescription drugs can only be dispensed by a healthcare professional to a patient with a valid prescription. The products listed in this recall notification have not been evaluated by Health Canada for safety, effectiveness or quality and may pose serious health risks.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Skin Creams and Lotions, please do not use them. Instead, kindly return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

Background:
Clobetasol Propionate is a highly potent topical (i.e., applied to the skin) Corticosteroid prescription drug used to treat inflammatory skin conditions. It should be used only under the supervision of a physician. Side effects of these medication include skin irritation, weakening or deterioration. Topical Corticosteroids can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce adverse effects, including symptoms of Adrenal Gland suppression (low blood pressure, low blood sugar, weight loss, muscle pain, gastrointestinal problems, and severe fatigue) or Cushing’s Syndrome (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, weight gain, muscle weakness, bone loss, and severe fatigue) depending on how much has been absorbed. Clobetasol Propionate should not be used by pregnant or nursing women.

Betamethasone Dipropionate is also a highly potent Corticosteroid prescription drug that can be used topically (i.e., applied to the skin) to treat inflammatory skin conditions. It should be used only under the supervision of a physician. Side effects of these medication include skin irritation, weakening or deterioration. Topical Corticosteroids can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce adverse effects, including symptoms of Adrenal Gland suppression (low blood pressure, low blood sugar, weight loss, muscle pain, gastrointestinal problems, and severe fatigue) or Cushing’s Syndrome (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, weight gain, muscle weakness, bone loss, and severe fatigue) depending on how much has been absorbed. Like Clobetasol Propionate, Betamethasone Dipropionate should not be used by pregnant or nursing women.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm drug or cosmetic poisoning or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any substance, return it to your retailer for refund, making sure pets and small children can’t access the suspect product.

Disposal of this product must be in accordance with local municipal hazardous waste requirements to protect your personal safety, the local drinking water supply and the ecosystem. Contact your local government waste management authority for details.
