US/Washington: Michael Angelo’s Scampi & Meat Lasagna Recall [US]Michael Angelo’s Gourmet Foods, Inc. expands its existing recall for an estimated total of 5,677 pounds of Frozen Shrimp Scampi and Meat Lasagna Products due to misbranding and undeclared chicken, as well as egg, soy and/or shrimp, the last three of which are known allergens, sources of dietary intolerance and possible triggers of Anaphylaxis, a serious and potential fatal situation, requiring immediate medical intervention. The United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) reports the following Frozen Meals are subject to this recall:

  • 26-ounce boxes, containing plastic trays, labeled, “Michael Angelo’s Uncompromisingly Italian-Style Shrimp Scampi with Linguini Pasta in a Fresh Heirloom Garlic-Butter Sauce” with a packaging date of May 7, 2016, a best-if-used-by date of May 7, 2017 and UPC of 0 37363 98377 0.
  • 11-ounce boxes, containing plastic trays, labeled, “Michael Angelo’s Uncompromisingly Italian-Style Lasagna with Meat Sauce” with a packaging date of July 11, 2016, a best-if-used-by date of July 11, 2017 and UPC of 0 37363 00612 7.

According to the USDA, due to a packaging error, the products labeled as, “Michael Angelo’s Uncompromisingly Italian-Style Shrimp Scampi with Linguini Pasta in a Fresh Heirloom Garlic-Butter Sauce” may contain a chicken piccata Meal. This Meal contains chicken, egg and soy, all ingredients not declared on the label. These products subject to recall do not bear the USDA mark of inspection, as shrimp products are regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”).

The products labeled as “Michael Angelo’s Uncompromisingly Italian-Style Lasagna with Meat Sauce” may in fact contain a shrimp scampi Meal. This Meal contains shrimp, an ingredient not declared on the product label. These products bear the establishment number “1009A” within the USDA mark of inspection.

These items were shipped to distributors in the southern United States.

The problem was discovered after the firm received customer complaints.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession these recalled Frozen Meals and could be allergic to their Egg, Shrimp/Shellfish or Soy ingredients, have a close family member who is allergic or has previously experienced Anaphylaxis or are unsure of your allergy status, please do not consume them. Instead, return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

==> Never depend on your senses of sight, smell, taste or touch to confirm food poisoning or contamination. If in doubt about the safety of any food, return it to your retailer for refund or toss it out in your household garbage, making sure pets and small children can’t access the suspect food.

Please note: This is an expanded recall notification issued to include additional Frozen Meals and production dates. The initial recall included 4,225 pounds of Shrimp Scampi Meals. This expansion adds an additional 1,452 pounds of Meat Lasagna Meals, for a total of 5,677 pounds of product.
