The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Canned Black Beans are subject to this recall:

  • Hy-Vee No-Salt-Added Black Beans, 15-ounce cans with the best-by code of “04 APR 2019 258F2 095 16 XXXX” and a UPC of 0075450105190. The product was sold at Hy-Vee stores in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin between April 22, 2016, and July 18, 2016.

According to the FDA, the potential for contamination was discovered after Faribault Foods, Inc., Hy-Vee’s supplier, announced it was issuing a recall after one consumer reported finding pieces of an ink pen in one (1) container.

If plastic or metal fragments are ingested, they could cut the mouth, stomach or other parts of the GI tract, cause intestinal perforation or serious infection and possibly require surgical intervention for their safe removal.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession any of the recalled Canned Black Beans, please do not consume them directly nor use them as an ingredient in another dish or preparation. Instead, return the Black Beans to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
