US/Silver Spring: Chicken of the Sea Light Tuna Recall [US]Tri-Union Seafoods LLC recalls an estimated 2,745 cases (equal to 107,280 cans) of Chicken of the Sea brand Canned Chunk Light Tuna due to possible spoilage and/or bacterial contamination hazard. FDA: http://ht.ly/ZDUkN

Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports this recall has been initiated because certain batch/lots of Canned Chunk Light Tuna may have been undercooked due to an equipment malfunction, an event that was uncovered during a routine inspection.

Tri-Union Seafoods reports the defect was part of the commercial sterilization process and could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens, both of which could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed. As of yet, however, there have been no reported illnesses to date connected with the affected products.

According to the FDA, the following batch/lots are subject to this recall:

  • Chicken of the Sea 5-ounce Canned Chunk Light Tuna in Oil sold in single cans between Feb. 10, 2016 and March 16, 2016 with a UPC of 0 4800000195 5 and a best-by date of 2/10/19:
