US/Silver Spring: 5796 - WesternBeefSunDriedTomatoFood Nation Produce recalls certain Western Beef branded packages of Sun Dried Tomatoes due to undeclared sulfites, a known allergen, sources of dietary intolerance and possible trigger of Anaphylaxis, a serious and potential fatal situation, requiring immediate medical intervention. The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Sun Dried Tomatoes are subject to this recall:

  • Western Beef branded packages of Sun Dried Tomatoes comes in an un-coded, in a 16 ounce or 32 ounce plastic containers and sold in Western Beef retail supermarkets in New York.

According to the FDA, this recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in packages of Western Beef packaged of Sun Dried Tomatoes.

While sulfates are permitted in the product when properly labeled, this product did not declare sulfites on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Western Beef package of Sun Dried Tomatoes revealed they contained 32.2 milligrams per serving.

If you believe you have purchased or have in your possession these recalled Sun Dried Tomatoes and could be allergic to their sulfite ingredients, have a close family member who is allergic or has previously experienced Anaphylaxis or are unsure of your allergy status, please do not consume them. Instead, return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
