The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Gourd Candy is subject to this recall:

  • Hua Zhi Ying brand Gourd Candy, sold in 250 gram un-coded, clear plastic packages and distributed in New York State. It is a product of China.

According to the FDA, this recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites/sulphites in packages of Hua Zhi Ying Brand Gourd Candy which did not declare /sulphites on the label.

Consumption of ten (10) milligrams of sulfites/sulphites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some people with Asthma. In addition, Anaphylactic Shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites/sulphites. Analysis of the recalled Hua Zhi Ying Gourd Candy revealed it contains 33.22 milligrams per serving, far above the safe threshold.

Instead, return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
