Additional information:
The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) reports the following Blood Glucose Meters are subject to this recall:

  • FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter
  • FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter

According to the FDA, when used with the Abbott FreeStyle test strips, the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter may produce mistakenly low blood glucose results. Neither Glucose Meter has been in production since 2010.

Abbott recommends patients using the recalled Glucose Meters should immediately contact Abbott Diabetes Care at 1-888-345-5364 to obtain a replacement meter. If an alternative Glucose Meter is available, immediately discontinue use of the recalled Glucose Meter and take the necessary steps to continue to monitor their blood sugar with the alternative meter.

If, however, this is the only Glucose Meter available, patients should continue to test blood glucose as recommend by their doctor while they wait for their replacement meter. When using a recalled Blood Glucose Meter, Abbott says to take precautions outlined here:
