Orange Blossom Farm Hot Dog Relish Recall [Canada]

Canada CFIA RecallCanada/Ottawa: Orange Blossom Farm recalls some Hot Dog Relish due to Botulism hazard. CFIA: http://ht.ly/qBmVT

Direct link: http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/inspection/2013/36623r-eng.php

Additional information:Orange Blossom Farm Hot Dog Relish
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) reports the following Hot Dog Relish is subject to this recall:

  • Orange Blossom Farm Hot Dog Relish, 500 ml jar; sold at St. Jacob’s Farmers’ Market in Ontario.

About Botulism:
Health Canada says Botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve poison that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum). Foodborne botulism is caused by eating foods that contain the botulism toxin. You can also get Botulism from an infected wound. All forms of Botulism can cause paralysis and be fatal so emergency medical attention is necessary.

Clostridium botulinum bacteria cannot grow in air, so Foodborne Botulism is usually seen only when certain foods are stored or prepared improperly. These typically include the following:

  • Improperly prepared low-acid, home-canned foods (such as asparagus, beets, green beans, mushrooms, peppers);
  • Improperly smoked fish;
  • Improperly prepared raw marine mammal meat (such as whale, walrus, seal);
  • Non-refrigerated storage of low-acid fruit juices (such as carrot juice); and
  • Baked potatoes improperly stored in aluminum foil.

About Listeria poisoning:
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that cause Listeriosis (Listeria poisoning), most often produce a gastrointestinal illness that can be quite serious or even fatal. Listeriosis in pregnancy, for example, may cause a miscarriage or fetal death. In other cases, people can develop Septicemia (a serious blood infection) or Meningitis (an inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges).

If you suspect your food is contaminated, do not eat it. Contact the retailer for a refund or replacement. Wash your hands, contaminated preparation surfaces, cutlery and serving dishes thoroughly with hot soapy water and dry. Contact your MD immediately if you experience Listeriosis symptoms.

Sequel Naturals Nutritional Shake Recall [Canada]

Canada HCSC RecallCanada/Ottawa: Health Canada recalls some Sequel Naturals Nutritional Shakes due to chloramphenicol contamination hazard. HCSC: http://ht.ly/qAphX

Direct link: http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/hc-sc/2013/36585a-eng.php

Additional information:
Health Canada/Santé Canada (“HCSC”) reports the following Nutritional Shakes are subject to this recall:

  • Vega One Vanilla Chai (437 gram and 874 gram formats)
  • Vega Sport Performance Chocolate

According to Health Canada, Sequel Naturals Ltd., the manufacturer, is refusing its request to recall these Nutritional Shakes despite the potentially serious health risks posed to consumers. Chloramphenicol is a prescription drug and should only be used under medical supervision in adults and children after careful consideration of the risks associated with its use.

Chloramphenicol is associated with a rare risk of Aplastic Anemia, a serious blood disorder that can be fatal. This reaction is unpredictable and not related to a specific dose of chloramphenicol. Other side effects that can be associated with chloramphenicol include allergic reactions in people who have sensitivity to the medication and effects on the bone marrow leading to decreased blood cells. In addition, it should not be used by pregnant or lactating women.

Health Canada says people should immediately consult with their physician or other healthcare practitioner if they have consumed or are currently consuming Vega One Vanilla Chai and/or Vega Sport Performance Chocolate Nutritional Shakes.

Health Canada is aware of other companies that may have used raw materials contaminated with chloramphenicol in the production of natural health products for the Canadian market. The Department has requested these companies voluntarily recall their affected products. All have agreed to do so except for Sequel Naturals Ltd., the manufacturer of the aforementioned Nutritional Shakes.
