About Milk Allergies:
For some people, milk (and milk products) are a source of urgent, dangerous and potentially deadly, allergic reactions. Due to modern food manufacturing methods, milk products may not “look” or “sound” like milk. Some examples of foods with milk proteins include artificial butter or cheese flavor; casein or caseinates; curds; ghee; hydrolysates; lactalbumin and lactalbumin phosphate; lactose, lactoglobulin, lactoferrin and lactulose; and finally, rennet (originally, ground calves’ stomach but more often now, by-products of genetically engineered bacteria, mold or yeast).

Anaphylactic Shock could occur in consumers who are allergic to milk or milk ingredients within a very short time, potentially leading to severe injury and/or death. If you suspect Anaphylactic Shock, call-9-1-1 or other local emergency number for immediate transport to a medical center. If trained and an emergency kit is available, it may be appropriate to give an injectable drug such as Epinephrine (also known as adrenaline or adrenalin) to the affected individual. Trade names of these products include EpiPen, Twinject, Adrenaclick, Anapen, Jext, Allerject and Auvi-Q. Please note: even patients who are apparently stabilized should still go to hospital for emergency evaluation. Further treatment is often necessary.

About Botulism:
Health Canada says Botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve poison that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum). Foodborne botulism is caused by eating foods that contain the botulism toxin. You can also get Botulism from an infected wound. All forms of Botulism can cause paralysis and be fatal so emergency medical attention is necessary.

Clostridium botulinum bacteria cannot grow in air, so Foodborne Botulism is usually seen only when certain foods are stored or prepared improperly. These typically include the following:

  • Improperly prepared low-acid, home-canned foods (such as asparagus, beets, green beans, mushrooms, peppers);
  • Improperly smoked fish;
  • Improperly prepared raw marine mammal meat (such as whale, walrus, seal);
  • Non-refrigerated storage of low-acid fruit juices (such as carrot juice); and
  • Baked potatoes improperly stored in aluminum foil.

About Salmonella Poisoning in Animals:
Salmonellosis (Salmonella poisoning) is a very common type of food poisoning caused by the Salmonella bacterium. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, animals with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some animals will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

It is important to note that infected but otherwise healthy looking animals can be Salmonellosis carriers and infect other animals or humans through various routes including oral-manual, oral-oral and oral-fecal. Always wash your hands thoroughly after feeding, petting or performing other activities with animals, especially those relating to waste elimination and disposal of fecal matter.
